Why relaxation makes you more productive

"Busy, busy, busy..."

It almost seems like the standard answer to the question "How are you?". Being busy might feel like success or proof that you matter.

But what if taking a break is actually the key to more focus, less work-related stress, and a better work-life balance? Relaxation isn't a luxury for when you have spare time. It actually helps you function better.

Why taking a break is important

Our body and brain can handle a lot, but not indefinitely. If we are constantly "on," we build up tension. You notice this, for example, when your concentration decreases, you get irritated more easily, or you feel like your head is full.

By regularly taking breaks, you give your nervous system a chance to recover. It doesn't have to be complicated. Just stepping away from your screen, taking a short walk, or consciously drinking a cup of tea without answering emails in the meantime can be enough.

These are not lost minutes, but valuable moments where you recharge.

What relaxation brings you

More clarity

If you keep going for too long, your concentration diminishes. You keep looking, but you're not absorbing anything anymore. That's when taking a step back helps. Often, you'll notice that solutions come faster when you stop forcing them. Rest creates space in your mind, and in that space, clarity emerges.

More focus

When you take regular breaks, it becomes easier to focus your attention on one task. You work less rushed and more focused. This doesn't mean you do less, but that you work more purposefully. And that usually leads to better results.

More creativity

Inspiration rarely arises under pressure. Good ideas often come during a walk, in the shower, or when you're doing nothing at all. By incorporating moments of rest into your day, you give yourself space to think more creatively.

Less stress

We often think that long work days lead to more productivity. In reality, it's about the quality of the hours you put in. A well-rested mind works more efficiently, makes fewer mistakes, and experiences less work-related stress.

Quality over quantity

As contradictory as it may seem, it is a misconception that the number of hours you work equals how productive you are. In reality, it's about the quality of those hours. And to deliver good work, rest is an ingredient not to be underestimated. A well-rested mind and body can often produce more quality work in less time than a tired mind toiling away for hours on end.

For example, I recently heard someone tell me: "If I take more time for myself and thus work a little less, my productivity and output are much better. So ultimately, this time of rest pays for itself many times over!"

Fortunately, awareness of the importance of rest and relaxation is growing, even in the workplace. More and more companies offer mindfulness courses, massages, and quiet rooms to give employees the opportunity to relax and recharge.

How to integrate more rest into your day?

Taking a break doesn't have to be grand or complicated. Our advice: start small and experience what it does for you. Here are a few practical tips:

  • Take short breaks between tasks.

  • Take a walk during your lunch break.

  • Consciously make a cup of tea and drink it without distractions.

  • Put your phone away sometimes.

  • Allow yourself to do nothing at all sometimes.

A tiny moment of relaxation

So, taking a break is not an extra when you have spare time. You probably recognize that you rarely actually have spare time, so such a moment of rest quickly gets left out. It is precisely slowing down occasionally that helps us to get further.
