When was the last time you experienced true silence? In our busy world, we are constantly surrounded by all kinds of sounds, such as phone notifications, the hum of traffic, and constant background chatter. True silence has become a rarity nowadays, something you have to actively seek out or create yourself.
In a previous blog post, we emphasized the importance of taking time for yourself and its positive impact on our health and well-being. This time, we delve deeper into the benefits of moments of silence – moments of true silence without distractions and sounds around you.
Why is silence so important?
A few years ago, I did an exercise where I had to spend a short moment in silence with my eyes closed. I remember this exercise well and how exciting I found it! I only lasted a few seconds and was confronted with myself and my own thoughts. This experience was an eye-opener and the starting point for a further exploration of the power of silence.
Silence has an incredibly positive influence on both our mental and physical health, and it's something you can learn to appreciate and integrate into your daily life.
The impact of silence on your brain
When we spend some time in silence, we give our brains space to recover. Research from Duke University shows that just two hours of silence per day can stimulate the creation of new cells in the hippocampus, the part of the brain essential for learning and memory. So silence is not only calming but can also actually make you smarter!
Physical benefits of silence
Taking time for yourself in silence has a positive effect on your physical health. Silence is not just about avoiding external stimuli and sounds; it goes much further than that.
Stress reduction
Noise can increase your stress level in your body. For example, your heart rate, blood pressure, and the stress hormone cortisol can rise when exposed to unpleasant sounds. But it also works the other way around: silence can lower your body's stress level and promote a sense of calm and tranquility. This also has a positive effect on blood pressure and heart rate.
Circulation
Resting in silence also helps relax the muscles in your body and improve blood circulation. Good circulation is crucial for our body's functioning because it ensures the distribution of oxygen and nutrients to all parts of our body, while simultaneously removing waste products.
Immune system
Because your body relaxes, it can focus on recovery, which can give a positive boost to your immune system.
Mental benefits of silence
In addition to the many physical benefits, taking time for yourself in silence also offers numerous mental advantages.
Concentration
Moments of silence can help strengthen concentration and attention. Without external stimuli, you can better focus on the task at hand, allowing you to work more efficiently and effectively.
Creativity
Without distractions, your brain can think more freely and come up with more creative solutions. In a calm and quiet environment, your brain gets the chance to zoom out and see things from a different perspective. This is also why many artists, writers, and thinkers seek silence during their creative processes!
Clarity
When you spend time alone in silence, the background noise disappears, and we can better overview complex situations, which can lead to new insights. This is often where "aha" moments occur.
Awareness
Silence also helps us better listen to our inner voice. This voice is often drowned out by the hustle and bustle of daily life, but in silence, we give it space. According to Eckhart Tolle, in his book "Stillness Speaks," silence is not just about the absence of sound, but also about a deeper state of presence and awareness. He refers to an inner peace and a space free from constant thoughts. This allows us to become more aware of how we feel and what is going on within us. This can give us valuable information, such as: are you still doing the right things, are you living according to your values, and are you still following your own path in life? Time for yourself in silence is a very valuable moment for reflection and gaining insights.
Sleep
A well-known, yet important point to mention: a quiet environment without disturbing sounds promotes deeper and more restful sleep.
How do you get comfortable with silence?
Now that we understand the power of silence, it's time to learn how you can add (more) silence to your life. Perhaps you still feel some resistance or find it daunting to create a moment of silence for yourself. We have a few tips to help you feel more comfortable about this.
Start small
And by that, I mean really small, a few seconds at a time. Then slowly build this up to a minute, a few minutes, and so on.
Reading
Various books and articles have been written about the power of silence. It can help you delve deeper into this theme. A book that personally helped me a lot is "Stillness Speaks" by Eckhart Tolle.
Apps
You can also use an app that guides you through a moment of silence. A great app for this is Headspace, with guided meditations starting from 1 minute. With the help of an app, you will surely succeed in building up your time in silence!
How do you apply moments of silence in daily life?
It might all sound interesting, but where do you find the time to create these moments of silence for yourself in your busy life? You now know that these moments don't have to last long; a few minutes is often enough. Given the many benefits this brings, it's more than worth this minimal time investment.
Here are a few tips for spending time alone in silence:
Quiet place at home
Create a quiet place in your own home where you can easily retreat. This doesn't have to be a large space; a spot with a nice view, a comfortable chair, or a cozy corner can be enough. Retreating to this quiet place can make a huge difference in how you deal with daily stress and challenges.
Quiet place at work
Creating moments of silence at your workplace is also incredibly effective, such as promoting your concentration, clarity, and creativity. For example, schedule short moments of silence where you retreat to a quiet meeting room or put on noise-canceling headphones. Nowadays, companies increasingly offer relaxation rooms where you can go to unwind during the day.
Nature walks
Go outside and take a walk. Nature has a calming effect on your body and mind.
Meditating
Start (or end) your day with a short meditation. Even a few minutes of concentrated silence can help you begin your day with a fresh and clear mind.
Digital detox
Spend some time without digital devices. This not only helps reduce noise levels but also ignores distractions from social media and other notifications. So, consciously turn off your phone, TV, or computer and enjoy the silence around you.
Taking time for yourself in silence is therefore a powerful way to feel physically and mentally better and can greatly help in gaining clarity and reflection. Short moments of silence can be easily incorporated into your daily life; it's minimal effort with a big impact.
