The term Deep Work has been gaining increasing attention in the world of productivity and personal development lately. What exactly does Deep Work mean, should we do something with it, and how could you apply this in your daily life?

What is Deep Work?

The term Deep Work was introduced by author and professor Cal Newport in his book "Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World". Deep Work means being able to fully focus and concentrate on a task without any external distractions, such as emails, social media, and other stimuli. Think about those moments when you were completely absorbed in a task, lost track of time, and were surprised by what you had achieved at the end. That's Deep Work in action!

What is the benefit of Deep Work?

If you can fully concentrate on a specific task for a certain period, without being disturbed by external distractions, you will notice that this will bring you many benefits.

  • Increased productivity: Deep Work allows you to fully concentrate on one task, enabling you to get more done in less time.

  • Quality over quantity: By doing something with full attention, you develop your thinking power, it helps you find creative solutions, and you will deliver better results.

  • Improved concentration: By regularly applying Deep Work, you can increase your concentration ability, which will also benefit you in daily life.

  • Less stress: Avoiding distractions and staying focused can significantly reduce your stress levels.

Deep Work in daily life

Now that we know what Deep Work means and what its benefits are, the next question is: How can you apply this in your daily life? Personally, I can enormously enjoy Deep Work and I apply it regularly during my work. The deep concentration brings me into a wonderful flow where I can produce unprecedented output and my creative brain is then running at full speed. That gives an enormous amount of satisfaction!

In advance, I create the right conditions to enter a deep focus. I find a quiet workspace and often put on a focus music playlist from Spotify, Headspace or Meditation Moments. Also, all my push notifications are off by default, so I cannot be disturbed by phone or email. And a delicious concentration-enhancing tea completes my Deep Work session.

Here are some suggestions on how you can create the ideal Deep Work setting:

  • Environment: Find a quiet place where you can work undisturbed. Tidy up your workspace and turn off notifications on your devices.
  • Use time blocks: Schedule specific time blocks in your calendar for Deep Work. These can be short sessions of 30 minutes or longer sessions of several hours, depending on your available time and task.

  • Set clear goals: Determine beforehand what you want to achieve during your Deep Work session. This keeps you focused and goal-oriented.

  • Avoid distractions: Turn off notifications, put your phone on silent, and let others know that you don't want to be disturbed for a while.

  • Practice regularly: Deep Work is like a muscle that needs to be trained. Start with short sessions and gradually build up. Over time, you will notice that your concentration improves.
